What is the Kyleena / Mirena IUD?
Mirena (also known as Kyleena) IUD is a intrauterine device (IUD) which provides reliable, reversible hormonal contraception for up to five years. It is more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
The IUD is made up of a small T-shaped frame with a small cylinder containing the hormone levonorgestrel. It does not contain estrogen. This cylinder slowly releases the hormone that acts on the lining of the uterus. The lining of the uterus becomes thinner and the cervical mucus becomes thicker which makes it harder for sperm to enter the uterus.

The popular Kyleena / Mirena IUD does not contain estrogen so it can be used in women who cannot take or have a sensitivity to estrogen. The IUD is effective for up to five years. Unlike the copper intra-uterine device (IUD), the IUD decreases the amount of menstrual bleeding and may decrease menstrual cramping.
IUDs are considered one of the most effective reversible forms of birth control.
What are some disadvantages of the Kyleena / Mirena IUD?
Complications associated with the IUD are rare but may occur. At Maud Medical Clinic, our team of experienced doctors are available to support you from IUD consultation, insertion and after.
Possible complications of inserting an IUD include irregular bleeding or spotting, perforating the uterus (making a small hole in the uterus), infection, or expulsion (the IUD falls out).
The hormonal IUD does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, (STIs) or HIV.
You will need a condom during sexual intercourse to protect against STIs and HIV
Is Nexplanon available in Calgary?

What is Nexplanon?
Nexplanon is a small, thin flexible arm implant that is placed under the skin of the inner non-dominant upper arm by our doctor at Maud Medical Clinic.
Nexplanon provides reliable, reversible contraception for up to three years. This method of hormonal contraception is more than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
What are the benefits of Nexplanon implant?
The implant does not contain estrogen so it can be used in women who cannot take or have a sensitivity to estrogen.
The implant is effective for up to three years. It has no negative impact on future fertility once removed.

What are some disadvantages of Nexplanon?
Complications associated with Nexplanon are rare but may occur. Our physicians are here to guide you through the entire process from consultation, implant and after.
Possible complications of inserting Nexplanon include redness to the area, bruising, and swelling.
In rare cases, numbness, migration of the implant into the muscle or blood vessel can occur.
The implant does not protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or HIV. Condoms should be used to protect against STIs or HIV.
Side Effects to be mindful of are
• Bleeding irregularities range from amenorrhea (no periods) to prolonged bleeding. Generally, over half of the women have no bleeding or infrequent bleeding. For those who have prolonged bleeding, this generally improves during implant use.
• Emotional lability, weight increase, headache, acne and depression are all possible side effects
